There is no question that Moorhead is a hockey town. Somebody should tell the girls.
Despite being arguably one of the most hockey-crazed communities in Minnesota, numbers for the Moorhead high school girls program have been consistently low.
"For a long time we have tried to figure out the reasons why, in a hockey hotbed like this, there aren't more girls playing hockey," Moorhead coach Jim MacFarlane said. "Absolutely, it concerns me."
Despite the numbers struggle, Moorhead's girls have been successful, reaching the state tournament three times (2001, '02, '06). The Spuds are also in the midst of their eighth winning season in a row.
