BISMARCK - Gov. John Hoeven today requested a federal disaster declaration for damages from a spring snowstorm that could exceed $33 million.
The severe storm April 1-3 produced freezing rain, ice and heavy snow accumulations that caused power disruptions and extensive infrastructure damage, mostly to rural electric cooperatives.
The swath of damage involved 12 North Dakota counties and the Standing Rock Sioux Indian Reservation.
"The aftermath of this spring storm continues to pose challenges for some rural electric customers, and we're doing all we can to help with resources and other necessary support," Hoeven said in a statement.
If approved, a presidential disaster declaration will cover 75 percent of eligible costs resulting from the storm, with the state covering 10 percent of the costs.

Initially, more than 8,000 customers were without power after the storm.
Counties hit by the storm were Adams, Benson, Burleigh, Grant, McHenry, McLean, Mercer, Morton, Oliver, Sheridan, Sioux and Wells.
