GRAND FORKS — As a Kmart gets ready to close, a Grand Forks church is developing plans for what to do with the empty space.
The retailer's departure from its spot at the Grand Cities Mall in Grand Forks will leave more than two dozen acres to use, and community members are already making plans.
"We actually several months ago hired a master planner," said pastor Paul Knight from HOPE Church in Grand Forks. A consultant visit is scheduled for early next month to help narrow the focus of the many ideas they have.

Among the plans being discussed are a proposed senior living facility, something Knight said has been a dream of his for many years, but also being discussed are a new city library, more stores, and green space.
It is still too early in the planning process to determine how much the projects could cost.
