Jamestown Guard entrants do well in excellence event

JAMESTOWN, N.D. - Soldiers from Company B 141st Engineer Battalion in Jamestown recently competed in the National Guard's second-largest shooting competition, the Excellence in Competition, in Camp Guernsey, Wyo.

JAMESTOWN, N.D. - Soldiers from Company B 141st Engineer Battalion in Jamestown recently competed in the National Guard's second-largest shooting competition, the Excellence in Competition, in Camp Guernsey, Wyo.

Soldiers who competed were Sgt. Cale Kiser, Lisbon; Spc. Tyrel Hoppe, Carrington; Spc. Paul Rohrer, Fargo; Sgt. 1st Class Roger Nelson, Cooperstown; Sgt. Shawn Wanzek, Jamestown; Sgt. James Exner, Jamestown; and Staff Sgt. Gary Varberg, Hannaford.

Camp Guernsey hosted bout 92 competitors from 54 units in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming.

The 118-year-old competition involved personnel from the U.S. Air and Army National Guard units.

The next step in this competition was canceled due to Hurricane Katrina.

The team from Company B 141st Soldiers finished in second place overall.

Individual Company B soldiers placed in the following positions:

- Varberg, first place in Excellence-In-Competition Rifle Match, Combat Rifle Individual Grand Aggregate Open and 305 Individual Combat Rifle Match Open.

- Hoppe, first place in 302 Individual Combat Rifle Match Open.

- Nelson, first place in 221 Excellence-in-Competition Pistol Match.

- Kiser, received six points towards his Distinguished Rifle Badge. Nelson and Varberg have also earned the Distinguished Rifle Badge.
