JAMESTOWN, N.D. - The City Council has lifted its ban on outdoor watering, but some restrictions are still in place.

Lawns may be watered on odd or even days, depending on house numbers. And all outdoor watering must be done between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m., the City Council decided Wednesday.

The city has been battling a water shortage because its wells have been plugging up with calcium and iron. The wells are to be replaced, but the work is not expected to start until fall.

Residents who don't follow the rules could face a $1,000 and 30 days in jail.

City administrator Jeff Fuchs has the authority to ban all outdoor watering for up to three days if supplies get low, the City Council said.

The ban was imposed over the Fourth of July weekend.

Fuchs said the city would have run out of water if the ban had not been in place.
