JAMESTOWN, N.D. -- Residents of Jamestown have voted to increase property taxes to help animals.
The half-mill increase to benefit the James River Humane Society was approved in the primary election, getting 65 percent approval.
It will cost the owner of a house valued at $100,000 about $2.25 per year, and generate about $13,500 per year for the animal shelter. The shelter currently gets $1,500 annually from the city.
The James River Humane Society takes in about 150 animals each year. It has one part-time employee and about 24 volunteers.
