A judge set bail at $100,000 cash or bond this morning for a convicted serial rapist accused of violating terms of his supervised probation.
Authorities accused Gero Mahto, 38, of violating several terms of his probation after Jamestown, N.D., officers questioned him regarding a suspicious phone call a gas station cashier received.
The caller, later identified as Mahto, asked for help getting rid of marijuana. While being questioned, Mahto fled from officers before being caught. A search of his residence found alcohol, which is a violation of his release.
Mahto pleaded guilty in 1992 to raping four women living in south Fargo basement apartments. He served 15 years in prison for the rapes and is currently serving 10 years on probation.
Cass County prosecutors unsuccessfully attempted to civilly commit Mahto in 2006 as a sexually dangerous individual.
