BISMARCK - A legislative committee is beginning a study of North Dakota's marriage laws, including the ideas of waiting periods for marriage licenses and mandatory premarital counseling for couples.

"In several states, you don't go in and get a marriage license today and get married this afternoon. You wait a few days so that it's not an impulsive thing," said Sen. Dick Dever, R-Bismarck.

Dever is a member of the Legislative Council's interim Judiciary Committee, which is assigned to study the state's marriage laws.
