Lightning struck a former Catholic church in Bejou, Minn., early today starting a fire that destroyed the structure, Mahnomen County Sheriff Doug Krier said.

The fire was reported about 12:36 a.m. after neighbors heard a loud clap of thunder and looked outside to see the church burning from the top down, Krier said.

The Mahnomen Fire Department and firefighters from a number of other communities in the region responded to the blaze, he said.

Krier said he did not know how old the church was but he said it had not been in use for some time.
