These North Dakota National Guard soldiers lost their lives in the global war on terrorism:
• Spc. Jonathan P. Fettig, 30, of Dickinson was killed in action July 22, 2003, while serving with the 957th Engineer Company (Multi-Role Bridge) near Ramadi, Iraq.
• Sgt. Keith Smette, 25, of Fargo was killed in action Jan. 24, 2004, while serving with the 957th Engineer Company (Multi-Role Bridge) near Fallujah, Iraq.
• Staff Sgt. Kenneth W. "Kenny" Hendrickson, 41, of Bismarck was killed in action Jan. 24, 2004, while serving with the 957th Engineer Company (Multi-Role Bridge) near Fallujah, Iraq.
• Spc. Philip Brown, 21, of Jamestown died May 8, 2004, at Balad, Iraq, after having been wounded in action earlier that day near Samarra, Iraq, while serving with the 141st Engineer Combat Battalion's Company B.

• Spc. James Holmes, 28, of Peoria, Ariz., died May 8, 2004, at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany of wounds he received in action near Samarra, Iraq, on May 3, 2004, while serving with the 141st Engineer Combat Battalion's Company C.
• Staff Sgt. Lance Koenig, 33, of Fargo was killed in action Sept. 22, 2004, while serving with the 141st Engineer Combat Battalion's Company B near Tikrit, Iraq.
• Spc. Cody Wentz, 21, of Williston was killed in action Nov. 4, 2004, while serving with the 141st Engineer Combat Battalion's Company A on Main Supply Route Tampa in Iraq.
• Spc. Michael L. Hermanson, 21, of Fargo was killed in action May 24, 2006, while serving with the 164th Engineer Combat Battalion's Company A, near Al Abayachi, north of Baghdad, Iraq.
• Cpl. Curtis Mehrer, 21, of Bismarck was killed in action June 6, 2006, while serving with the 1st Battalion, 188th Air Defense Artillery Regiment near Khogyani, Afghanistan.
• Sgt. Travis Van Zoest, 21, of Bismarck was killed in action June 6, 2006, while serving with the 1st Battalion, 188th Air Defense Artillery Regiment near Khogyani, Afghanistan.
• Cpl. Nathan Goodiron, 25, of Mandaree was killed in action Nov. 23, 2006, while serving with the 1st Battalion, 188th Air Defense Artillery Regiment near Qarabagh, Afghanistan.
• Cpl. Christopher Kleinwachter, 29, of Wahpeton was killed in action Nov. 29, 2006, while serving with the 1st Battalion, 188th Air Defense Artillery Regiment in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan.

Twelve additional service members with North Dakota ties also have been killed in the war.
• Sgt. Michael E. Bitz, 31, of Wishek was killed in action March 23, 2003, at An Nasiriya, Iraq, while serving with the U.S. Marine Corps' C Company, 1-2nd Marine Regiment, Task Force Tarawa.
• Pfc. Sheldon R. Hawk Eagle, 21, of Grand Forks was killed in a helicopter crash in Mosul, Iraq, on Nov. 15, 2003, while serving with the U.S. Army's 1-320th Field Artillery Regiment, 101st Airborne Division based at Fort Campbell, Ky.
• Sgt. Thomas J. "T.J." Sweet II, 23, of Bismarck died Nov. 27, 2003, at Forward Operating Base Junction City, Iraq, while serving with the U.S. Army's 1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Infantry Division based at Fort Riley, Kan.
• Spc. Anthony William Hamilton "Tony" Monroe, 21, of Bismarck was killed in action Oct. 11, 2004, in Baghdad, Iraq, while serving with the U.S. army's Division Artillery, 1st Cavalry Division based at Fort Hood, Texas.
• Spc. Dennis J. "D.J." Ferderer Jr., 20, of New Salem was killed in action near Ad Duluiya, north of Baghdad, Iraq, on Nov. 2, 2005, while serving with the U.S. Army's 1-15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, based at Fort Benning, Ga.
• Cpl. Jeremiah S. Santos, 21, of Devils Lake and Minot was killed in action June 15, 2006, in Baghdad, Iraq, while serving with the U.S. Army's 2nd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division based at Fort Hood, Texas.
• Spc. Paul A. Beyer, 21, of Jamestown was killed in action June 23, 2006, near Baghdad, Iraq, while serving with the U.S. Army's 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division based at Fort Campbell, Ky.

• Maj. Alan R. Johnson, 44, of Montpelier was wounded near Al Muqdadiyah, Iraq, on Jan. 26, 2007, and died of his wounds later that day in Balad, Iraq, while serving with the U.S. Army Reserve's 402nd Civil Affairs Battalion based at Tonawonda, N.Y.
• Sgt. Jason A. Schumann, 23, of Hawley, Minn., was killed in action May 19, 2007 near Al Diwaniyah, Iraq, while serving with the 3rd Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team of the 10th Mountain Division based at Fort Polk, La.
• Staff Sgt. David C. Kuehl, 27, of Wahpeton was killed in action in Al Taji, Iraq, on May 22, 2007, while serving with the U.S. Army's 4-9th Infantry Regiment, 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team of the 2nd Infantry Division based at Fort Lewis, Wash.
• Pfc. Jonathan C. Yanney, 20, of Litchfield, Minn., and formerly of Hettinger, N.D., was killed in action on Aug. 18, 2009, near Arghandab, Afghanistan while serving with the U.S. Army's 1-17th Infantry, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division based at Fort Lewis, Wash.
• Spc. Keenan Cooper, 19, of Wahpeton was killed in action July 5, 2010, in Afghanistan while serving with the U.S. Army's A Troop, 4th Squadron, 74th Cavalry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division based at Fort Bragg, N.C.
