A Moorhead man charged with kidnapping in connection with a shootout with police in April has been moved from Fargo's MeritCare Hospital to a prison hospital in South Carolina.

U.S. Attorney Drew Wrigley told WDAY-AM radio that Vincent Degidio was moved from MeritCare last week to the "Just Care" facility in Columbia, S.C.

The trip was made by an air ambulance chartered by the federal government, according to the U.S. Marshal Service.

Degidio, who remains in the custody of federal officials, is charged in U.S. District Court with kidnapping, possession of a firearm by a felon and using a firearm during a violent crime.

He also faces state charges of attempted murder of a police officer and attempted criminal sexual conduct.

According to court papers: Degidio abducted a Fargo woman from her home at gunpoint and forced her to drive to Moorhead, where he told her he intended to rape and kill her.

The woman was pistol whipped but ultimately escaped.

A manhunt ensued and at one point Degidio and police exchanged gunfire, court papers say.

During a final confrontation with police, Degidio raised his handgun and officers opened fire, striking Degidio twice, court documents state.
