A north Fargo man was injured early Friday evening when the vehicle he was driving struck a light pole on Main Avenue across from McDonalds in Fargo.

Dwight Ira Johnson, 1025 17th Street N., lost control of his truck at 7:25 p.m. because of medical reasons, said Fargo police Sgt. Greg Lemke. Johnson veered from the westbound lane, smashed into a curb and struck the light pole, which was cleanly broken from the base and fell on top of his vehicle, Lemke said.

Johnson then tried to put the truck in reverse, but Lemke said a nurse who responded to the accident put the vehicle in park and took the keys out of the ignition.

No one else was injured, Lemke said.

Johnson was coherent and talking after the accident, Lemke said. He was taken by ambulance to MeritCare Hospital. His condition was not known.

Lemke said he did not know if Johnson was wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident.

The truck Johnson was driving sustained considerable damage, with the light pole cutting straight through the hood nearly to the windshield.

Police blocked off Main Avenue from Ninth Street North to the 10th Street underpass for about a half-hour.
