A Crookston, Minn., man who died Friday from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound following a series of pursuits with police, has been identified as Jeffrey Scott Pierson.

Police attempted to stop Pierson, 31, and a high-speed chase ensued. He led officers outside Crookston and then back into town, at which time pursuit was called off.

At some point, Pierson crashed his vehicle and fled on foot, apparently armed.

A manhunt followed and another pursuit began after the suspect stole a vehicle. The high-speed pursuit was stopped and resumed a couple of times.

A Polk County deputy eventually forced Pierson's vehicle off of County Road 11.

When officers approached the vehicle they found Pierson bleeding from a gunshot wound. He was taken to Riverview Hospital in Crookston, where he later died.

Police said Saturday that Pierson was wanted for failing to keep in contact with a probation officer on a felony ATM theft case.
