Mayville (N.D.) State University will look to the past and the future Friday.
The campus has scheduled an inauguration ceremony for President Gary Hagen at 11 a.m. in Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.
Hagen became the university's 16th president in February, after serving for several months as interim president.
Also Friday, Mayville State will host its annual celebration of North Dakota Statehood Day. All events are free and open to the public.
The event begins at 1:30 p.m. with a panel discussion on "Workforce Development and the Future of North Dakota." Panelists include North Dakota University System Chancellor Bill Goetz, Greater North Dakota Chamber of Commerce President Dave MacIver and Grand Forks Herald Editor Mike Jacobs.

A tour of the Smithsonian Institution exhibit "Between Fences" will follow at 3 p.m.
At 3:45 p.m., Minnesota State University Moorhead professor Steven Hoffbeck will present "Breaking Down the Color Line: Black Baseball in North Dakota, 1895-1948."
A 118th birthday party for North Dakota will begin at 5 p.m. in the Campus Center Foyer.
Global warming forum
Concordia College will host polar explorer Will Steger on Monday to talk about the effects of global warming on the polar regions.
The public forum is at 8 p.m. at Memorial Auditorium. Following the discussion will be a resource fair with information on global warming solutions.
Downtown point man
Tim Flakoll, provost of the Tri-College University, will now also serve as coordinator of NDSU's downtown campus facilities.

With NDSU's growing presence downtown, the university gave additional duties to Flakoll. He will monitor construction and ongoing maintenance issues for the three buildings, said John Adams, vice president for finance and administration.
Flakoll is based in the former Northern School Supply building.
'New Minnesotans'
Minnesota State University Moorhead will host Gregg Aamot, author of "The New Minnesotans," at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 8 in Comstock Memorial Union Room 203.
Aamot is an award-winning Associated Press reporter who has written about immigration and other issues for Minnesota newspapers for nearly 15 years. His book details the challenges and realities immigrants and refugees face while assimilating to the Upper Midwest.
Security conference
North Dakota State University's Information Technology Systems and EduTech are presenting the fourth annual K-20 IT Security Conference titled "A Call to Action for the Education Community."
The event is scheduled for Wednesday and Nov. 8 at the Ramada Plaza Suites in Fargo.

The conference is designed to increase awareness of the risks associated with computer and network use in an academic setting.
