Mayville recall petition submitted

MAYVILLE, N.D.

MAYVILLE, N.D. -- A petition to recall Mayor Jim LeClair has been submitted to the city auditor here for certification.

A total of 250 people signed the petition, said Mayville resident Jim Steinke, who led the effort to gather signatures.

A candidate to oppose LeClair has not been announced.

Auditor Gary Winger said he received the petition Thursday and would verify the signatures and addresses.

The petition needs 153 signatures to put a recall election on the June 8 ballot, according to North Dakota Century Code.

Previously those leading the petition effort thought they needed 235 signatures, or 25 percent of the total voters in the most recent presidential election.

Dylan Abler, one of the recall petition's sponsors, said he's confident someone will come forward to run against LeClair once the item is added to the ballot.

"Nobody wants to get too committed until they determine if the election is going to happen," Abler said.

A group of residents announced their plans to pursue a recall election at the Feb. 18 City Council meeting.
