The new Clay County attorney was sworn in this afternoon, nine months after he was elected.
Brian Melton campaigned and won the spot in November while he was serving in Iraq with the Minnesota National Guard.
He was one of 2,600 Minnesota Guard members who returned this summer after nearly two years away from home.
This afternoon, Judge Lisa Borgen - who is a former Clay County attorney - swore Melton in during a ceremony in a Clay County courtroom.
Borgen and Melton first met when they were students at the University of North Dakota law school. Later, they worked together in the Clay County attorney's office.
