WAHPETON, N.D. - A Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative spokeswoman calls it the worst sugar beet harvest in decades.

Spokeswoman Susan Johnson says up to 20 percent of Minn-Dak's crop will be left in muddy fields. Grower members of the Wahpeton-based co-op had hoped to harvest 108,000 acres of sugar beets this year.

Johnson says the growers will take a financial hit but she says crop insurance may lessen the blow.

She says the year was shaping up to be one of the best until heavy rain put an end to the harvest.
