Claims that upward of $2,000 worth of steaks were stolen from a West Fargo business may have been overcooked, police say.
Dakota Country Foods reported to police on Jan. 4 that one of the company's trucks had been abandoned in Fargo at Sixth Avenue and Third Street North.
Missing from the truck were 17½ cases of steaks, a load valued at $2,100, police said at the time.
Investigators now think the steaks were sold by an employee of the company, though the payment for the meat wasn't given to Dakota Country Foods, Detective Sgt. Greg Warren said on Wednesday.
Warren said there may have actually been as many as 21 cases of steaks sold, and criminal charges are unlikely.

"It's turned into more of a civil matter," he said.
