MOORHEAD - Cuts in state aid have contributed to the need to raise tuition next year in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, officials said Monday.

Average annual tuition and fee rates would increase by $210 for students at community colleges and $301 at the state universities under a proposal from Chancellor James McCormick.

At Minnesota State University Moorhead, tuition and fees for a student taking 31 credits next year would be $6,494 under the proposal, 5 percent more than this year.

Minnesota State Community and Technical College has one of the lowest proposed increases among the system's two-year campuses.

At the Moorhead campus, a full-time student would pay $4,973 in tuition and fees next year, a 2.7 percent increase.
