MOORHEAD - Police here say they don't know the circumstances that led a 64-year-old man to accidentally shoot himself in the leg Tuesday night.

Sgt. Clint Stephenson said the bullet entered the man's upper left thigh and exited near his kneecap. He was bleeding heavily and taken by ambulance to Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, but his injury was not believed to be life-threatening.

The man was home alone in his apartment at 2505 Country Club Parkway when he accidentally shot himself at about 11:20 p.m. Police recovered a Beretta 9 mm pistol at the scene.

Stephenson said the man wasn't cleaning the gun.

"It was a gentleman that's under a lot of medications, and we're not exactly sure if he was aware of what he was doing or not," he said.

The bullet was found at the foot of the man's bed. Police don't anticipate seeking charges against him, Stephenson said.
