Nelson spent part of Friday night drinking with friends at an apartment at 1211 34th St. Circle, Moorhead.
When Nelson told his friends he intended to take his infant son and walk 1½ miles to his home, one of his friends, Eugene Bates, 21, tried to stop him.
The two struggled, and Nelson stabbed Bates in the chest with a knife.
When police arrived, Nelson ran but was apprehended after a foot chase with officers.
A bloody knife was found in Nelson's pocket.
Nelson told an officer, "I stabbed him. It was self-defense," the court complaint said.
Bates suffered a stab wound to his chest that punctured a portion of his heart, according to the complaint.
He is recovering after undergoing surgery, the complaint said.
