A Moorhead man faces a felony domestic abuse charge after a Saturday night incident, Police Lt. Robert Larson said.

Larson said Kerry Lynn Merkel, 49, 416 12th St. S., was arrested at 9:34 p.m. Saturday.

The victim told officers called to the scene that during an argument, Merkel smashed her cell phone and put his hands around her neck, attempting to strangle her, Larson said.

He was arrested for domestic assault and interfering with a 911 call.

Under a Minnesota law that took effect Aug. 1, attempting to strangle the victim during a domestic assault is a felony.
