Moorhead Public Service will offer a $35 rebate to electric customers who recycle their old, working refrigerators and freezers.
The rebate is part of MPS' incentive program called Bright Energy Solutions, which provides a variety of energy efficiency rebates for residents and businesses.
The utility's new Appliance Turn-in Program is designed to help residents get rid of old "energy hog" appliances in their garage or basement, according to a news release from General Manager Bill Schwandt. Old refrigerators and freezers can use three to four times as much energy as new models and are often used for only a few items.
Moorhead Public Service will pay a $35 rebate for each "turned-in" refrigerator or freezer. They will also arrange to have the appliance picked up at the customer's home for free.
A recycling truck will be in Moorhead on Sept. 22 to pick up old appliances. Customers hoping to take advantage of the program should call (218) 299-5400 to schedule a pick-up.
