Thirty members of the North Dakota National Guard will leave today for Mississippi to help victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The soldiers, from the Army quartermaster battalion in Devils Lake, are experts in water purification, said Dave Somdahl, a spokesman for the North Dakota Air Guard.

On Sunday, 58 members of Fargo's 119th Fighter Wing flew in an air transport plane to Gulfport, Miss., with two planeloads and two truckloads of equipment following them, Somdahl said.

The engineers will work to repair buildings and re-establish electrical service.

The Guard members will also set up a mobile kitchen and work on water purification, Somdahl said.

As more needs become known in the wake of the hurricane, it's likely more North Dakota Guard members will be sent to help, Somdahl said.

"My presumption is, this is just the beginning," he said.
