About 8 percent of North Dakota's telephone subscribers registered for the "do-not-call" list in its first two available days, said Liz Brocker, a spokeswoman for the attorney general.

About 8 percent of North Dakota's telephone subscribers registered for the "do-not-call" list in its first two available days, said Liz Brocker, a spokeswoman for the attorney general.

By 4:40 p.m. Friday, 19,000 of the state's 231,000 residential telephone subscribers had requested to be added to the list, Brocker said.

Online registration began Thursday.

Registrations came in at a rate of 1,000 phone numbers an hour Friday and 500 numbers each hour Thursday, said the attorney general's office.

Consumers can register at www.ag.state.nd.us . Registration will also be available through a toll-free telephone number within the next two or three weeks.

That number has not yet been released.

The state law restricting telemarketers takes effect Aug. 1. However, charities that use their own employees to solicit and companies that have had a business relationship with the customer within the past two years are exempt from the restriction.

Minnesota and South Dakota also offer "do-not-call" lists.
