WASHINGTON - The North Dakota Attorney General’s Office will get almost $525,000 in grants to fight crime, according to a news release.
The state’s congressional delegation announced Wednesday that the U.S. Department of Justice allocated the funds through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant and Residential Substance Abuse Treatment for State Prisoners Program.
The grant will be used to enhance narcotics enforcement, support services for victims of violent crimes, and develop substance abuse treatment and reintegration programs.
Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., asked the Drug Enforcement Administration last month to better support local and state officials in fighting drug crimes, the release said. The senator also pressed for additional resources, including DEA agents, for western North Dakota after crime statistics showed an increase in drug-related activities.
“We’re working in a variety of ways to support our communities’ efforts to maintain their high quality of life,” Hoeven said in a statement. “To that end, these funds will empower our law enforcement officials to better protect our communities from drug trafficking and violent crime through shared information and planning while also supporting substance abuse rehabilitation services.”
