Early years: Born in Nelsonville, Ohio, on March 25, 1965, as the fourth of eight siblings, Parker grew up in relative poverty following the divorce of her parents. Raised by her mother and stepfather, she landed her first TV show at the age of 8. Parker toured with four of her siblings in the national company of "The Sound of Music" and was chosen to take over the title role of "Annie" on Broadway. She later attended Dwight Morrow High School, and landed a role in the made-for-TV movie "My Body, My Child" before being cast as one of the lead roles in the 1982 sitcom "Square Pegs."

Career: After high school graduation, Parker decided to pursue a full-time acting career. She had supporting roles in "Footloose," and "Firstborn," and the lead role in "Girls Just Want to Have Fun." Parker was cast in the comedy "L.A. Story." Other film roles were in: "Honeymoon in Vegas," "Hocus Pocus," "Ed Wood," "The Sunshine Boys," "Miami Rhapsody," "The First Wives Club," and "Mars Attacks!"

She gained respect as a theater actress with her lead role as a dog in "Sylvia," and Broadway roles in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" and "Once Upon a Mattress." Parker's star shot up with her portrayal of Carrie Bradshaw in the HBO series "Sex and the City."

Family: Married to Matthew Broderick since 1997; one child, James Wilke Broderick, born Oct. 28, 2002.
