SABIN, Minn. – No one was injured here this afternoon when flames ripped through a vacant two-story house, Clay County Sheriff Bill Bergquist said.
Neighbors called 911 about 1:30 p.m. to report smoke coming from a house in the 100 block of Second Street North, and firefighters arrived to find flames extending from the basement to the roof, Bergquist said.
“It wasn’t really safe to send anybody in there,” he said of the burning house with melted siding. The Sabin-Elmwood Fire Department fought the blaze from the outside with help from Barnesville and Dilworth firefighters.
By 2:30 p.m., white smoke was still billowing from the structure, and firefighters were using axes and pikes to break windows. But the fire appeared to be largely under control.
Bergquist said that when the fire started, no one was in the house, which sits less than a block from County Highway 52. He said work was being done on the house, which had a for sale sign in front of it.

The sheriff said it was too soon to say what caused the fire. He said a fire marshal had been called to investigate the blaze.
