OAKES, N.D. - Merlo Tveter will remain mayor of Oakes after winning a special recall election Tuesday.

Tveter received 425 votes. Challenger Doug Fitzler tallied 326 votes.

"I'm happy about the results," Tveter said. "I didn't think it was right in the first place."

A committee of Oakes citizens filed a petition for a recall election in mid-April after Tveter tried to fire the city's engineering firm, Moore Engineering of West Fargo. The council, at a special meeting, voted to retain the firm.

Tveter said Oakes residents "had their shot at it" in Tuesday's election. "Now it's back to work."
