Residents of Oakes, N.D., will vote for a new mayor June 17, the City Council decided Wednesday.

The position has been open since former Mayor Dave Ross resigned April 8 because of a job relocation to Wahpeton, N.D.

One person, Marlo Tveter, filed a petition for election before Monday's deadline. Otherwise, the council could have appointed a mayor from within.

The mayor will serve the remainder of Ross' term, which ends in June 2006. The filing deadline for candidates is May 15.
