Officer-involved shooting reported in southeast South Dakota

BERESFORD, S.D – A police officer shot and injured a man in this southeastern South Dakota town on Thursday after the man apparently aimed a gun at the officer and a relative.

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley has confirmed that the Division of Criminal Investigation, at the request of the Beresford Police Department, is investigating the shooting.

Beresford police responded to call where Christopher Lee Heuer, 21, Sioux Falls, was njured as a result of this incident in a residential area in the small town about 30 miles south of Sioux Falls along Interstate 29.

Union County Sheriff Dan Limoges said police were called to a home for a suicidal man just after noon. Officers were met by a family member outside the home before a man came out of the house with a rifle and attempted to aim it at an officer, Limoges said.

The officer and the relative hid behind a patrol car, Limoges said. The suspect then walked into the street and the officer shot the man in the arm, then requested an ambulance

At the completion of the investigation, the DCI will issue a case report and shooting summation within 30 days to be reviewed by Jackley, the Union County states attorney and the Beresford police for a final determination on the officer’s action.
