Officers to patrol Jamestown school

The Jamestown Sun -- Police will be at Jamestown Middle School today as a security precaution after a sixth-grade student reported discovering a threatening note Wednesday in a school bathroom.

The Jamestown Sun -- Police will be at Jamestown Middle School today as a security precaution after a sixth-grade student reported discovering a threatening note Wednesday in a school bathroom.

Principal Joe Hegland posted a letter on the middle school Web site to parents at 6 a.m. Thursday that said a note containing a threat of a shootout on Thursday had been reported in a restroom.

"It is important to note that no adult has seen the note," said Robert Toso, superintendent for Jamestown Public Schools. "The student reporting it said she had destroyed it before reporting it."

Police interviewed other students and staff and searched the area but found no other indications of a threat, he said.

Toso and other administrators made the decision to hold classes Thursday with police security in place.

The school also asked that officers be stationed at the high school to help people feel safe.

Jamestown Police Chief Dave Donegan said police detectives are investigating the note. Officers also were at the middle and high schools Thursday. Two officers were evident in the middle school as well as a patrol car on the street Thursday morning.

Donegan described the reported note as "scribbled on a smaller piece of paper."

"The content of the note is an investigative matter," he said. "It was threatening, but to no individual."

While Donegan would not release any details of the investigation, he did say that there was a lot of misinformation in the community.

"At no time was a weapon found in the school," he said. "I have heard that rumor, but it is not true."

Capt. Gary Peterson is one of the detectives investigating the incident and is also a school board member.

"As a School Board member I feel it was handled very well by the administration. You don't want to overreact, but you need to ensure the safety of the students," he said.
