MOORHEAD - A decorated Clay County deputy has been fired but is appealing his termination, according to a county official.
Deputy Ryan Carey, a recipient of the Combat Cross Award and multiple K-9 unit honors, was fired on July 25 and is now appealing his termination, Human Resources Director Darren Brooke said.
Both Brooke and Sheriff Bill Berquist said they cannot comment further on the firing at this time.
Carey has been a deputy with Clay County since June 11, 2001, Brooke said.
Carey, along with two other deputies, received the Combat Cross in 2009 for their actions during the search for and shootout with Vincent Degidio Jr., who was later sentenced to 29 years for kidnapping and firearms charges.

Carey has won multiple K-9 unit awards with his K-9 partner Cuda, including top rookie dog, the Kojak Memorial Award for first place in criminal apprehension and fifth place out of 90 canine teams at the 2008 United States Police Canine Association Region 18 canine trials in Detroit Lakes, Minn.
Carey and Cuda competed in the same competition in 2010 and again won the Kojak Memorial Award.
