Two vehicles burned and a 78-year-old man died in a two-vehicle crash Monday near Oakes, N.D., the state Highway Patrol said.
The victim, who was not identified, was driving a 1973 Chevy pickup south on North Dakota Highway 1 when he made a left turn in front of a northbound 1999 Freightliner truck, the State Patrol said in a news release.
The truck hit the pickup on the passenger side. The vehicles became interlocked, and the truck pushed the pickup into the ditch. Both vehicles became engulfed in flames.
The truck's driver, David L. Dietz, 64, of Oakes, managed to escape his vehicle. He was taken by ambulance to Oakes Community Hospital, where he was treated and released for unspecified injuries.
The pickup driver was pinned and unable to escape. His name was being withheld pending identification by a medical examiner.
