Perham awarded $2.4 million for water treatment

PERHAM, Minn. - The U.S. Department of Commerce has awarded the city government here $2.4 million to expand Perham's wastewater treatment system, Minnesota Rep.

PERHAM, Minn. - The U.S. Department of Commerce has awarded the city government here $2.4 million to expand Perham's wastewater treatment system, Minnesota Rep. Collin Peterson announced Tuesday.

The Commerce Department's Economic Development Administration reported the funds could create at least 300 jobs from the work.

"Perham has a strong industrial economy, and this EDA investment will help to keep it healthy," Peterson, who represents western Minnesota, said in a news release.

Mayor Tim Meehl reported the federal funds should cover around half the cost of what Perham had budgeted to expand its water treatment system.

"We had to do this project because we've outgrown our sewer system," Meehl said in the statement from Peterson's office. "This will help save our taxpayers a lot of money by keeping down the rate increases."
