A West Fargo salvage yard employee who saved five kittens from being crushed last month will receive PETA's Compassionate Citizen Award.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Director Daphna Nachminovitch said John Sullivan will receive a framed certificate and a letter of appreciation from PETA.
"We thank the animals' lucky stars for compassionate people like John Sullivan, whose kind example shines a spotlight on the plight of these and other homeless animals," Nachminovitch said.
Sullivan, who works at Hazer's Auto and Truck Salvage, was unaware Tuesday that he received the award.
"This is a shock to me. I didn't realize saving kittens would do this," he said.

In early May, Sullivan heard meowing coming from a pile of discarded appliances sent to the salvage yard during Cleanup Week.
He found five kittens in or near a clothes dryer that was about to be compacted. Sullivan rescued the kittens, which all survived and found homes.
