Phil Martens, 68, of West Fargo, ND, died Wednesday, June 30, 2004, doing what he loved most, fishing, at his summer home in Devils Lake, ND.

William Phillip Martens was born March 10, 1936, in Pipestone, MN, to William Homer and Wincie Bonita (Earhart) Martens. He graduated from high school in Pipestone and farmed in the Pipestone area before moving to the Fargo-Moorhead area in 1960. He married Mary Jane Marsden on December 29, 1977, in Fargo, ND.

He was employed by Montgomery & Sons before joining McDonald Livestock Co. as a partner and served as Vice-President. Phil retired in 1998.

Phil, being a child at heart, enjoyed driving his school bus for the West Fargo school district on the Horace route. Phil always said, "Don't take yourself too seriously. You need a sense of humor to laugh at the world with yourself in it."

Phil is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Martens, West Fargo, ND; six sons: Michael (Cathy) Martens, Sacramento, CA; David (Elizabeth) Martens, Pensecola, FL; Todd Martens, Moorhead, MN; Jeff (Sharon) Martens, Fargo, ND; Tim (Vicky) Martens, Sacramento, CA; Jim Martens, Grand Forks, ND; one sister, Susan (Dale) Johannsen, Pipestone, MN; four grandchildren, Michael Martens, Hassloch, Germany; Sandra Martens, Fargo, ND; Shannon Martens, Sacramento, CA; Evan Martens, Sacramento, CA; Family in-law, James, Mary, Dick and Beth Marsden, Fargo; two nieces: Jill (Brian) Cockburn, Harrisonburg, VA; Amy Marsden, St. Louis Park, MN; three nephews: Joel (Barb) Johannsen, Pipestone, MN; Chris (Erica) Marsden, Minneapolis, MN; Chad (Jenny) Marsden, Fergus Falls, MN; and his side-kick, Bubby III, our golden retriever.
