Earlier this month, the Climax-Shelly (Minn.) School District threw a delicious fundraiser for one of its students, eighth-grader Cherith Grove.

After a battery of tests at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo and the University of Minnesota Children's Hospital in Minneapolis, she was recently diagnosed with lymphangiomatosis, an extremely rare disease of the lymphatic system.

The district organized a pie auction during a basketball game featuring the homemade creations of Cherith's friends and family. Fellow eighth-graders made colorful auction signs and worked hard to get the word out.

The event, under the slogan "She's Our Cherry Pie," raised $5,000 for Cherith and her family. Bidding wars flared up throughout the evening; one pie went for $180.

Donations for Cherith, who is still hospitalized in Minneapolis, can be sent to Cherith Grove Fund, C/o Agassiz Federal Credit Union, 116 West Broadway, Climax, MN 56523.
