DETROIT LAKES, Minn. — A 76-year-old man says he was forced to make an emergency landing in a rural Detroit Lakes cornfield after his aircraft lost power Tuesday night, July 16, according to a news release from the Becker County Sheriff's Office.
At around 6:40 p.m., the Becker County authorities received a report that an airplane had gone down in a cornfield north of the Detroit Lakes Becker County Airport. When deputies arrived, they found the pilot, Theodore Kiebke, 76, had walked away from where the plane crashed.
Kiebke, who was the only person in the plane, told police he attempted to land his single-engine biplane in a cornfield after it lost power just north of the airport. As the plane landed, it flipped upside down, according to the release.
Kiebke was transported to St. Mary's Hospital in Detroit Lakes for injuries the Sheriff's Office said did not appear to be life-threatening.
The Becker County Sheriff's Office and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the incident, according to the news release.
