Fargo police arrested a man for impersonating a police officer early Wednesday after he apparently tried to talk a woman out of her car.

Police Sgt. Kevin Volrath said dispatchers got a call from a woman in Fargo just before 2 a.m. The woman said she was in her vehicle and a man had been following her in another car. When she stopped in the 300 block of 19th Street North, the man got out, approached her vehicle and tried to get her out, but she refused and used her cell phone to call police.

When officers arrived, they confronted the man, who was still standing outside the woman's vehicle, and arrested him.

The man identified himself as Robert Smith, 31, and did not give an address, Volrath said. Police were unable to confirm his identity.

He was arrested for impersonating a police officer, disorderly conduct and possession of stolen property, which was found in his car.

The woman "did an outstanding job," Volrath said. "Even though she was shook up, she remained in her locked vehicle and called the police."

The man remained in the Cass County Jail Wednesday afternoon.
