Police bring joy at Moorhead's first-ever 'Shop-with-a-Cop'

Moorhead police and children pick out gifts in the Target toy department

MOORHEAD -- Some lucky Moorhead children may just get what they want for the holidays, and some local "elves" in uniform helped with that process.

Members of the Moorhead Police Department joined nine students in picking out holiday gifts for themselves and their families at Target Wednesday, Dec. 5th.

While "Shop-with-a-Cop" events are held nationwide, this is the first that's taken place in Moorhead.

It will now be an annual event, put on by the non-profit Moorhead Police Athletics and Activities League.

Moorhead Public Schools chose students who they felt could use some extra joy this holiday season.

It was also a chance for officers to bond with the young members of the community.

"Most of the times we deal with people it's on the worst day of their life," said Sgt. Scott Kostohryz, of the Moorhead Police Department. " So it helps to just have them be comfortable talking to us and to see us as the good guys as opposed to the bad guys."

Half of the money used for the gifts was donated by Affinity Plus Credit Union, and the other half was paid for by Target.
