A Fargo cab driver was arrested early Saturday after police said he attempted to kidnap a customer.

Fargo Police arrested 28-year-old Cory Smith, 319 Broadway, for attempted kidnapping, aggravated assault and terrorizing after police responded to a neighbor's call reporting shouting and horn honking at 2:20 a.m. near the Red River.

An officer arrived at the scene within two minutes and found Smith attempting to restrain the victim.

The 23-year-old victim told officers she willingly got into the cab and asked to be driven to a location near Dike East, but Smith drove past the address and into the Dike East parking lot, where the victim said he assaulted her.

Smith tried to tie the victim's wrists together with a plastic restraint device, but the victim honked the horn and got out of the car.

A knife was discovered on the ground where Smith had been standing.

Fargo Police Sgt. Kevin Volrath said "this is a rare incident" and the public should not be worried.

"We've had incidents where the driver has been robbed, but as far as the taxi driver attacking a customer, I can't remember any," Volrath said.

Smith began working at the Fargo cab company one month ago. A spokesman for the company said background checks are standard for new drivers.

Smith is expected appear before a judge on Monday.
