Police checking cars to help prevent theft

Police will give multiple vehicles in a south Fargo neighborhood a test Thursday night to determine whether items inside are susceptible of being stolen.

Police will give multiple vehicles in a south Fargo neighborhood a test Thursday night to determine whether items inside are susceptible of being stolen.

Volunteers and police officers will look into parked vehicles on the streets and in parking lots to see if the doors are locked and valuables such as cell phones, credit cards, CDs and wallets are visible, according to a news release.

Forms will be left on the windshield indicating whether drivers "passed" or "failed" the surprise check, the release said.

The effort is part of the police department's "Lock It or Lose It" campaign, aimed at reducing property crimes by reminding people to secure valuable items, the release said.

Thursday's checks will be the first of several planned around Fargo in areas where thefts from vehicle rates are higher than average, the release said.
