MOORHEAD – Looking to cool down, an intoxicated man jumped off the Veterans Memorial Bridge into the Red River about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to Moorhead police.

The man was able to swim to the Moorhead side of the river near the bridge, which links Fargo and Moorhead, said Assistant Chief Joe Gaughan of the Moorhead Fire Department.

Moorhead police Lt. Tory Jacobson said the man was out of the water before officers arrived. Soon afterward, officers found the man, wet from the river and “heavily intoxicated,” walking along Main Avenue, Jacobson said.

"Him being intoxicated, his judgment was such that he thought that he was going to cool off because he was warm," Jacobson said. "He was content with his decision, but we weren't.”

Police identified the man as Angelo Rodriguez, 23, of Fargo.

Rodriguez, who was uninjured, was taken to a detox center and cited for disruptive intoxication, Jacobson said.
