BERTHOLD, N.D. – A Michigan man who arrived in court here to plead not guilty to drug charges was caught with marijuana, Berthold police said.

John Downs, 61, appeared in Berthold Municipal Court on Wednesday to face charges stemming from his November arrest on drugs and weapons charges, police said in a statement.

While Downs was appearing in court, Police Chief Al Schmidt discovered that Downs had warrants for terrorizing charges out of Williston.

After Downs pleaded not guilty to the drug charges, Schmidt arrested him on the warrants and searched Downs, finding a quarter ounce of marijuana, according to the police statement.

Downs was taken back to the judge, where he pleaded guilty to the drug charges, police said.
