FARGO - About a dozen police officers spent roughly two hours searching a large area of north Fargo after someone reported seeing a man crossing 12th Avenue North with a hunting rifle at about 1:05 p.m., Lt. Joel Vettel said.

No one was found with a gun during what Vettel described as a precautionary search.

"The officers at the scene felt that it was necessary to ensure the safety of the public," he said.

After the initial call to the 3900 block of 12th Avenue North, a second person calling from Fargo's industrial park reported that the person police were looking for might be in that area. Officers set up a large perimeter and swept a couple of parking lots and some storage yards in the industrial park, Vettel said.

A number of businesses also were asked to voluntarily lock down, and some did, Vettel said.
