Portion of new I-29 lanes to open

Motorists using Interstate 29 tonight will notice some progress on the construction project in the area of 19th Avenue North, as North Dakota Department of Transportation officials open a portion of the interstate's new southbound lanes.

DOT officials will shift motorists onto the new southbound portion of I-29 between 19th Avenue North and Main Avenue.

Two new southbound lanes in that stretch will be opened but DOT crews will continue to work on the shoulders of

I-29 in that same vicinity. Drivers are asked to use caution and reduce their speed to the 40 mph speed limit.

DOT officials said the widening and reconstruction of I-29 north of 19th Avenue North is ongoing and head-to-head traffic north of there will continue to Cass County Road 20.

Southbound traffic in that portion of I-29 should be re-directed to the new southbound lanes by the end of September, DOT officials said.

Transportation officials also announced two other project updates:

- Starting at 8 tonight, DOT officials will shut off the traffic signals at the interchange of University Drive and Interstate 94 to install of new signal poles. The intersection will be controlled by flaggers during the time the signals are shut down. DOT officials expect to have the signals functioning again by 11 p.m.

- Lane closures on the 12th Avenue North overpass bridge over I-29 will remain in effect as crews install traffic signals and place pavement markings.

The 12th Avenue North overpass bridge will consist of one eastbound lane and one westbound lane, including turn lanes for loop ramps to access I-29, for at least another week.

DOT officials said the lane closures on the 12th Avenue bridge are expected to be reopened in mid-August.
