A recount requested by North Dakota Republicans showed no change in the vote total in the state House race in Fargo's District 21.

The recount, conducted Monday afternoon, showed Democrat Steve Zaiser with 1,631 votes against 1,609 for incumbent Republican Rep. Rachel Disrud.

The first unofficial results from election night showed Zaiser winning by 22 votes. The county canvassing board later found four more absentee ballots, three for Zaiser and one for Disrud.

Disrud said she asked for the recount because she wanted to honor her supporters. The party and House Republican caucus also wanted the recount.

After the results were in Monday, a process that took a little more than two hours, Disrud was philosophical.

"I think this was a good process to go through," she said. With redistricting and the increase in use of absentee ballots, "I've heard a lot of people say, 'How do we know we're doing things accurately?' We've confirmed we in North Dakota run a very good system."

Zaiser said the final margin, which was the same as that on election night, "is a credit to the Cass County Auditor's Office for running a tight ship."
