The "Reforest the Red" planting project will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Trefoil Park, 1321 Elm St. N. in Fargo.

The project consists of planting 1,000 trees and shrubs along the Red River. Planting the trees in key areas along the river will create a buffer to maintain river bank stability, encourage the growth of native plants, improve water quality and provide a suitable habitat for wildlife, said a news release from River Keepers.

The public is welcome to help plant the trees and shrubs. Volunteers should wear long pants, closed-toe flat shoes, gloves that can get muddy and a shovel labeled with their names.

A short training session on planting will be held at various times during the day. Volunteers will dig holes, plant, mulch and water trees and shrubs, the release said.
