JAMESTOWN, N.D. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says the amount of water that will pass through Jamestown on the James River this year is unprecedented.

The corps tells the Jamestown Sun that releases from the Pipestem and Jamestown reservoirs could reach 900,000 acre feet this year. An acre-foot is the amount of water covering an acre, one foot deep.

The 2009 flows totaled about 530,000 acre feet. In some dry years, the dams had releases of nearly zero.

Officials say the two dams have performed the job of flood control perfectly through the summer.
